Rugosa Roses
Rugosa roses are extremely hardy and most are exceptionally disease resistant with wonderful wrinkled, healthy foliage. All are derived from Rosa rugosa, a native of Japan and Siberia. Their fragrance has notes of spice, and their ability to repeat flower make them ideal hedging plants – often seen en masse in parks or by roadways. Some have attractive red hips, which adorn them from late Summer to Autumn. These can be used for making rose hip syrup, or dried for use in teas.
Most popular of the Rugosa Roses with a dazzling display of autumn foliage is Roseraie de l’Hay. Although Hansa is almost identical and has a more manageable upright habit. Fru Dagmar Hastrup holds a coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit and displays outstanding huge blooms; while the Grootendorst Rugosas – F.J; Pink; Peach and White – are incredibly pretty and frilly, and make colourful additions to any garden.
Pruning: Prune to desired shape once established in February or March. For hedging, ensure the tallest stems are cut regularly to encourage a bushier habit.
